What To Wear To Your Portrait Session

A big part of planning your dream photo shoot is choosing what to wear. Going over your wardrobe choices can be both exciting and filled with anxiety. The most important thing to remember is that the portrait session is all about you and what you want. It always helps to be prepared so you can get the most out of your “model for a day” experience.

You want to start with something comfortable when you arrive to the studio, because this is what you’ll be wearing during styling. Choose something easy to remove without messing up your hair or smearing your makeup.

I also recommend that you bring the appropriate undergarments in nude color for light color clothing and black for dark color clothing. Include things like strapless bras, panties, slips and shapewear for form fitting outfits.

When looking for that perfect outfit for your portrait session, keep in mind a few things:

  • Make sure your clothing fits your form. Fitted clothing that shows your shape will look best in photographs.

  • Think of textures. Lace, beadwork, embroidery, leather, velvet, chiffon, and chunky knits add interest to your photos.

  • Avoid high contrast patterns, logos and graphics.

  • Shop in your closet. Select pieces that you love and you feel comfortable in.

If you need extra help finding that splendid piece of clothing, you can always go shopping, borrow from a friend or rent your outfit at Rent the Runway. While I showcase dresses in this blog, feel free to bring your favorite jeans with an amazing top.
